Tiffany & Co. was founded in 1837 by Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young in New York City. Initially, the company focused on selling stationary, fancy goods, and accessories, but it soon began to specialize in fine jewelry. In 1848, the company introduced the “Tiffany setting,” an engagement ring with a raised diamond held in place by six prongs, which is still popular today. In the late 1800s, Tiffany’s became known for its luxury silverware, and it was chosen to create the medals for the 1892 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago.
During World War II, the company’s flagship Fifth Avenue store was temporarily closed, but it was able to continue operating by manufacturing and selling war-related goods. After the war, the company’s fortunes improved, and it began to expand internationally, opening stores in London, Paris, and other cities around the world.
In the 1960s and 1970s, the company was led by CEO Walter Hoving, who oversaw a period of significant growth and expansion. During this time, Tiffany’s expanded its product line to include watches, leather goods, and home decor. In the 1980s and 1990s, the company continued to expand globally, and it also introduced a more affordable line of jewelry called “Return to Tiffany.”
Today, Tiffany & Co. is a well-known luxury brand, with flagship stores in major cities worldwide. It’s known for its high-quality diamond and precious gemstone jewelry, as well as its iconic blue box and ribbon packaging.
